CHAPTER NINE

“I THINK everything went well today,” Kimberly said, feeling the agonizing irony of that statement, considering where she was discussing it with Jax. In his bedroom. Nervous, she looked away to focus on the plasma screen TV over the fireplace. “That is—considering…” She couldn’t bring herself to say “that we’re sharing a bedroom,” so she finished weakly, “…our situation.”

When he didn’t speak, she couldn’t help looking at him again. He stood before the wall of windows and glass doors, his back to her, as though he couldn’t bear to acknowledge she was there.

“Jax?” she coaxed, feeling awkward and hating the feeling. Jax was her best friend in the world. Just the word marriage between them had already started destroying their closeness. She fought it, refusing to let such an unthinkable thing happen. After all, there was no real marriage.

Hurrying over to him, she took his hand, working to reassure him as well as herself. “Jax, don’t be upset. Honestly, nothing has really changed. We’re still good friends. This fake marriage stupidity won’t alter that.” She tried to be cheerful and forced a laugh. “Remember that time we went camping? We shared that tent? You saw me in my underwear and I saw you in yours.”

She had been eleven and he’d been fourteen. She’d had no shape whatsoever and her underwear consisted of a T-shirt and baggy cotton panties covered with cartoon figures. His boxers were gray and baggy.

Unfortunately things were different now. Her nightgown was flimsy silk. Luckily she’d packed a long, blowzy T-shirt in case she needed a swimsuit cover. She opted to put that on for modesty’s sake so she was only bare from just above her knees down. If she were lucky, he would still wear gray boxers, the bigger and more shapeless the better. Though she’d changed for bed, he hadn’t, so she couldn’t be sure how hard seeing him in his sleep gear would be. If she were really, really lucky he wore full pajamas, top and bottom. She had a bad feeling he didn’t.

“And—and this bed is huge,” she went on, trying to eke out any positives she could think of about their forced living situation. “A full grown cow could stretch out between us in that thing. And—and besides that, I hardly move at night. You’ll never even know I’m there.”

She thought she heard him groan. Or was it the wind moaning in the rafters? She checked her watch in the moonlight. “It’s eleven o’clock, Jax,” she said. “You should think about getting to bed. You said yourself, you and Tracy want to get your promotion going by eight. That means breakfast at seven.”

He moved slightly, at least his head did as he shifted to look at her. Without saying a word, he looked away and fixed his gaze on the night sky, the bright moon. He was very upset.

Deep inside, she fought feeling bitter about how obviously upset he was. “Look, Jax,” she said, unable to keep her bruised ego totally at bay.
